A Note from Your SMARTS Teacher
Hey everyone! I hope you all are doing well and staying healthy and enjoying your time at home away from school! I'm sad that our class had to end two weeks early. In this folder I made a few videos of me playing the beats we had worked on with photos of the food rhythms we discussed as well. I hope you enjoy the videos and have fun when you play along. If you have a drum or any percussion instrument you can use that, but feel free to use your lap or table or anything else you can find. I also attached an improvised drum jam for you guys to follow along and play with me! I look forward to seeing you guys next semester! Be well and enjoy the drumming.
SMARTS Lesson
Practice playing rhythms by ear and sight to be able to create your own song.
Step One. Play along to the food rhythms I have recorded playing.
Step Two. After you have played along with my food rhythms I would like you to pick a few of the rhythms and arrange it in your own order and play that combination over and over again.
Step Three. Play along on my Jam Along video and try to replicate what I am doing and follow the changes as they happen. Then add your own spin on it and see if you can add rhythms that complement mine! There are also video links below with popular songs you may know that have the drums removed! Take some time to play along with those songs and get creative.
Step Four. Take the SMARTS Percussion Methods Challenge below!

Now create your own song! Choose five foods of varying syllables that are in your house. Learn how to play those foods as rhythms. Then put them in a creative order and make a song. Then, choose a backing track below. These backing tracks are songs that have all the other instruments, but the drums are removed so that you can play along! Play your original food rhythm song over top while the backing track plays in the background. Upload the video so we can learn it, too!
