SMARTS Silent Movies
Grades 7-12
Teacher: Robert Kerr

Your teacher is still working on your lesson, but in the mean time check out these great classic silent movies for inspiration!

Le Voyage dans la Lune

This is considered the first science fiction film.
  • What do you notice about the use of the music and sound effects?
  • How else did the film makers create movement other than just through the actor's movements?
  • Overall how did the film make you feel?
  • What would you borrow from this film knowing what you now know about making a silent movie?

Modern Times Clip

This silent movie was considered the first "talkie" even though there is only a few lines spoken in this movie at the end.  They did play the recording underneath the action in this scene.
  • How did they create humor in this scene?
  • Describe the physical movement of the actors
  • How did the sound effect and music add to the scene?
  • What was your favorite part?
  • How did this scene make you feel?

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

This film is considered the first horror movie.  It is a German expressionist movie, and the set and costumes show that very clearly.
  • Did you find this movie scary?
  • How did this film make you feel?
  • How did this film use written words where the previous two films did not?
  • What did you enjoy the most about this film?  The characters?  The set?  The costumes?  The music?  Why?
  • How would explain this film to someone who had never seen it before?
